How to control YouTube with an Elgato Stream Deck

You can control YouTube from an Elgato Stream Deck on Windows when your browser publishes the playing video as an active media session. Dedicated keys can show the current video and handle playback, while a Stream Deck+ dial can add timeline seeking, per-app volume, and media-source selection for a deeper desk control.

Can Stream Deck control YouTube?

Yes. YouTube supports keyboard media controls, and Stream Deck can control a YouTube browser session when the browser publishes it to Windows. Play a video first, then test play, pause, timeline, and playlist actions.

The Windows plugins do not connect to a private YouTube API. They use the media session that the active player publishes to Windows. That keeps the setup simple, but it also means Stream Deck can only display metadata and send commands the player makes available.

Use Playback - Windows for one visible action per key, or Now Playing - Windows for deeper control from one Stream Deck+ dial.

Choose the right YouTube player

YouTube runs inside a browser, so Stream Deck sees the browser media session rather than a separate YouTube desktop application. The cleanest test uses one YouTube tab, one playing video, and no other audio or video tabs competing for the same session.

YouTube officially supports play and pause media keys, stop, and next track in a playlist. Previous and next behavior is context-sensitive: a playlist gives those actions a predictable destination, while an isolated video or suggested-video flow can behave differently.

Test YouTube compatibility first

Do this short test before buying or styling a complete profile. It separates a player-session problem from a Stream Deck layout problem.

  1. Open one YouTube tab in the browser you normally use.
  2. Play a standard video and confirm its title becomes the active Windows media item.
  3. Test play and pause before adding playlist or timeline controls.
  4. Use a playlist when verifying previous and next.
  5. Repeat the test with other media tabs closed, then add them back one at a time.

Choose by control surface rather than price. Playback is the fit when you want literal, glanceable keys. Now Playing is the fit when you own Stream Deck+ and want more of the player available from one physical control.

How to set up YouTube controls

  1. Open one YouTube tab

Use the browser you normally keep open and close other media tabs during the initial setup.

  2. Start a standard video

Play a recorded video and confirm Windows receives its title before testing special content.

  3. Choose keys or a Stream Deck+ dial

Use Playback - Windows for dedicated keys or Now Playing - Windows for seeking and source views on a dial.

  4. Install the selected plugin

Purchase it through Elgato Marketplace, install it, and find its controls in the Stream Deck action list.

  5. Add video and playlist controls

Place live now playing, play or pause, next, previous, and volume. Add seeking when using Now Playing.

  6. Test a real YouTube playlist

Use a playlist with items before and after the current video to verify both previous and next behavior.

The most useful YouTube controls

Live now playingSeeing the active video title and thumbnailDisplays what the YouTube browser session publishes to Windows.
Play or pauseVideos, tutorials, and long-form listeningYouTube officially supports keyboard play and pause media controls.
Previous and nextYouTube playlistsNext is predictable in a playlist; previous also depends on playlist context.
SeekTutorials, podcasts, and long videosNow Playing can use a published timeline when the browser exposes it.

Start with play or pause and live now playing. Add previous, next, volume, and deeper dial views only after the basic session stays reliable in the player you chose.

YouTube setup notes

  • Build around playlists when previous and next matter; isolated videos do not provide the same queue semantics.
  • Keep only one YouTube tab playing during setup so the displayed title and controlled tab are unambiguous.
  • Browser focus is not the same as media-session ownership. A background YouTube tab can remain the active player.
  • YouTube ads, live streams, Shorts, and premieres can expose different timelines or commands from ordinary videos.

The reliable profile is the one tested against your real listening context, not the one with the most actions. Remove any control the current player never exposes consistently.

YouTube and Stream Deck questions

Can Elgato Stream Deck control YouTube?

Yes, when the browser publishes the playing YouTube video as an active Windows media session.

Can Stream Deck pause YouTube without browser focus?

It can when YouTube remains the active browser media session. Another media tab can take ownership even when YouTube is still open.

Can Stream Deck skip YouTube videos?

Next works best in a playlist, and previous also depends on having a previous playlist item. YouTube documents a next-track media-key action for playlists.

Can Stream Deck seek through a YouTube video?

Now Playing - Windows can provide timeline controls when the browser publishes a usable video position.

Why does Stream Deck control the wrong YouTube tab?

Browser tabs share media-session handling. Close or pause competing tabs and establish one active YouTube session.

Do I need YouTube Premium?

The Stream Deck plugin does not require YouTube Premium. YouTube account features, advertising, and playback rules remain separate.
