How to control Spotify with an Elgato Stream Deck

The Windows plugins do not connect to a private Spotify API. They use the media session that the active player publishes to Windows. That keeps the setup simple, but it also means Stream Deck can only display metadata and send commands the player makes available.

Use Playback - Windows for one visible action per key, or Now Playing - Windows for deeper control from one Stream Deck+ dial.

Spotify offers both a Windows desktop app and a browser player. Either can work with Windows media controls, but they appear as different media sources. Build your Stream Deck profile around the one you actually use every day instead of testing one and later switching to the other.

The desktop app is usually the cleaner starting point because it creates a distinct Spotify session. The web player shares its session with the browser, so another tab playing audio can become the active source. Now Playing - Windows can help when several media sessions are open because its source view lets you select the intended player.

Do this short test before buying or styling a complete profile. It separates a player-session problem from a Stream Deck layout problem.

1. Open the exact Spotify player you plan to use: desktop or web.
2. Start a normal song inside an album or playlist; merely opening Spotify is not enough.
3. Confirm Windows exposes the title and playback state before arranging the whole profile.
4. Test previous and next inside a playlist, where both actions have a clear destination.
5. If you use the web player, repeat the test after opening another audio-producing browser tab.

Choose by control surface rather than price. Playback is the fit when you want literal, glanceable keys. Now Playing is the fit when you own Stream Deck+ and want more of the player available from one physical control.

1. Choose Spotify desktop or web

   Open the exact Spotify player you intend to keep using. The desktop app and browser player create different Windows media sources, so configure against one deliberately.

2. Start a playlist or album

   Play a normal track before opening the Stream Deck controls. Starting playback gives Windows a title, playback state, timeline, and commands to expose.

3. Choose keys or a Stream Deck+ dial

   Use Playback - Windows for dedicated keys on any keyed Stream Deck, or Now Playing - Windows for deeper controls on a Stream Deck+ dial.

4. Install the Windows media plugin

   Purchase and install the selected plugin through Elgato Marketplace, then find its actions in the Stream Deck app.

5. Build the Spotify control group

   Add live now playing, play or pause, previous, next, and volume. On Stream Deck+, also test seek, queue, and source selection.

6. Test the Spotify contexts you use

   Try a playlist, album, and podcast if they are part of your routine. Confirm every action you plan to rely on before styling the profile.

Start with play or pause and live now playing. Add previous, next, volume, and deeper dial views only after the basic session stays reliable in the player you chose.

• Choose either Spotify desktop or the web player as your default and test that same route after every profile change.
• Keep browser video and music sessions closed while diagnosing the Spotify web player; add them back only after Spotify works alone.
• Test songs and podcasts separately if you use both, because the available timeline and previous/next behavior can differ by content type.
• A Spotify subscription is separate from the Stream Deck plugin purchase and does not change how the Windows media session is detected.

The reliable profile is the one tested against your real listening context, not the one with the most actions. Remove any control the current player never exposes consistently.
