How to control Sonos from a Stream Deck

There are two separate control styles. Now Playing - Sonos puts playback, volume, queue, seeking, and target switching on one Stream Deck+ dial and its touch display. Playback - Sonos puts live track information and focused actions on keys across keyed Stream Deck models.

Sonos organizes playback around rooms and temporary groups of rooms. The plugin control you add to Stream Deck is configured for one of those available targets, so the same physical desk can hold controls for a living room, office, studio group, or another part of the system.

A Sonos group is not the same as a permanent zone. Sonos documents groups as rooms playing the same content in sync and lets you adjust the whole group or an individual room. Use the Sonos app when you need to change group membership; use Stream Deck for the playback target and controls you want under your hand.

Choose Now Playing if you own Stream Deck+ and want several related views on one control. Choose Playback if you prefer one action per key, want controls spread across profile pages, or use a Stream Deck model without dials.

• A working Sonos system with at least one room that can play audio.
• Access to the music, radio, podcast, or audio service you want Sonos to play.
• Mac or Windows.
• Stream Deck 7.1 or later for both current Sonos editions.
• Stream Deck+ for Now Playing, or any Stream Deck with keys for Playback.
• An Elgato Marketplace account so the purchased plugin can be installed and updated.

The Stream Deck plugin does not provide a music service and does not replace the Sonos app for system administration. Confirm that Sonos playback works normally before diagnosing the Stream Deck layer.

1. Choose dials or keys

   Use Now Playing - Sonos when you have Stream Deck+ and want track, queue, seek, and group views on one dial. Use Playback - Sonos when you want dedicated actions on keys or use a Stream Deck model without dials.

2. Confirm the hardware and software requirements

   Now Playing - Sonos requires Stream Deck+, while Playback - Sonos works on any Stream Deck with keys. Both currently support Mac and Windows and require Stream Deck 7.1 or later.

3. Install the Sonos plugin

   Open the matching Elgato Marketplace listing, complete the one-time purchase, and install the plugin through the Stream Deck app.

4. Add the controls to your profile

   Open the action list in Stream Deck, find the installed plugin, and drag its dial or key actions into your profile. Playback lets you add only the focused actions you need; Now Playing concentrates related actions on one dial.

5. Choose a Sonos room or group

   Open the action settings and choose the Sonos room or group the control should target. You can keep multiple room or group configurations in the same Stream Deck profile for different parts of your home.

6. Play audio and test the controls

   Start audio on the selected Sonos target, confirm the live track information appears, then test playback and volume. On Now Playing, also move through the queue, seek within the track, and switch the active target.

7. Finish the profile for daily use

   Rename pages if needed, place related controls together, and choose main and accent colors that remain readable on your desk. Test every target once more before relying on the profile.

Elgato lists installed plugins in the Stream Deck action panel. Dial actions appear under the Dials tab on Stream Deck+, while key actions can be dragged into the standard key grid. Only actions supported by the installed plugin appear for that surface.

One-room desk. Assign a live now-playing control, play or pause, next, and volume to the room where you work. This is the most direct setup and the easiest one to diagnose.

Room-and-group profile. Keep separate controls for a private room and a shared group. Name the profile pages by location so you always know which target will respond before pressing a key.

Compact Stream Deck+ profile. Put Now Playing on one dial and reserve the other dials and keys for lighting, microphones, or other desk controls. Queue, seek, and target views remain available without occupying the key grid.

Start with one target, prove the complete path, and duplicate the working action only after it behaves correctly. That is faster than troubleshooting several rooms at once.

• Live artwork or track information, playback state, progress, target, and volume.
• Play, pause, previous, next, volume down, and volume up.
• Individual Sonos rooms or existing groups.
• Multiple room or group configurations in one Stream Deck profile.
• Queue navigation, timeline seeking, and target switching with Now Playing.
• Main and accent colors for readable controls that match your setup.
