How to control Apple Music with an Elgato Stream Deck

The Windows plugins do not connect to a private Apple Music API. They use the media session that the active player publishes to Windows. That keeps the setup simple, but it also means Stream Deck can only display metadata and send commands the player makes available.

Use Playback - Windows for one visible action per key, or Now Playing - Windows for deeper control from one Stream Deck+ dial.

Apple now provides a dedicated Apple Music app for Windows. Treat that app as a separate player from iTunes or music.apple.com: each route can expose different metadata and controls, so the Stream Deck profile should be tested against the exact player you use.

Apple documents play, pause, previous, next, seek, and volume shortcuts in the Windows app. Those native actions are a useful compatibility signal, but Stream Deck still relies on what the app publishes through the Windows media session. A shortcut existing inside Apple Music does not guarantee every field appears outside it.

Do this short test before buying or styling a complete profile. It separates a player-session problem from a Stream Deck layout problem.

1. Use the current Apple Music app for Windows rather than assuming an old iTunes profile behaves the same way.
2. Start a song from the middle of an album or playlist so previous and next can be tested in both directions.
3. Confirm the title, artist, artwork, and playback state that Windows receives.
4. Test seeking on a normal song before trying radio, music videos, or other special content.
5. If you also keep iTunes open, close it while establishing the Apple Music session.

Choose by control surface rather than price. Playback is the fit when you want literal, glanceable keys. Now Playing is the fit when you own Stream Deck+ and want more of the player available from one physical control.

1. Open Apple Music for Windows

   Use the current Apple Music app and close iTunes during the first test so there is one clear Apple media source.

2. Play from an album or playlist

   Choose a song with items before and after it. This gives you a useful test for metadata, previous, next, and timeline controls.

3. Choose keys or a dial

   Choose Playback - Windows for dedicated keys, or Now Playing - Windows for a Stream Deck+ dial with deeper navigation.

4. Install the selected plugin

   Complete the one-time purchase through Elgato Marketplace and install the plugin in the Stream Deck app.

5. Add the Apple Music controls

   Place live now playing, play or pause, previous, next, and volume. Add seek and source switching when using Now Playing.

6. Test normal and special content

   Confirm a standard song first, then try radio, music videos, or other content you use and note which commands remain available.

Start with play or pause and live now playing. Add previous, next, volume, and deeper dial views only after the basic session stays reliable in the player you chose.

• Prefer the dedicated Apple Music Windows app when you want a stable, separately identifiable player session.
• Do not assume an Apple Music, iTunes, and browser setup are interchangeable; test and name the profile for the player it controls.
• Use an ordinary library or playlist track for the first test. Radio, videos, and special items may expose a different command set.
• Apple Music membership and regional availability are separate from the one-time Stream Deck plugin purchase.

The reliable profile is the one tested against your real listening context, not the one with the most actions. Remove any control the current player never exposes consistently.
